Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a picturesque mountain town of about 28,000 residents in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border. It is Germany’s most popular ski destination and is known for its natural beauty and rich Bavarian traditions.
Set at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze (2,962 m), the town offers direct access to mountains, forests, and lakes. Nearby is Lake Eibsee, which is often considered one of Germany’s most beautiful natural sights. Gondolas and the historic train “Zugspitzbahn” make it easy to explore the surrounding mountain peaks. The “Zugspitzbahn” is an old-fashioned train that takes you through the valley and all the way up to an underground station at the peak of the Zugspitze mountain.
Bavarian culture is deeply rooted in everyday life in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Throughout the year, traditional festivals bring the village together with locals wearing Lederhosen and Dirndls, and celebrating with music, beer, and regional food. Farmers move their sheep and cows to the mountains in the spring, and back into the valley in the autumn. This tradition of moving the animal herds culminates with festive parades through the town.
What gives Garmisch-Partenkirchen its fairy-tale character are the painted houses, winding rivers, and long-established craft shops over a hundred years old such as blacksmiths, carpenters, cabin makers, seamstresses, engravers, and shoemakers. Many of the houses are very old, and preservation laws help maintain the town’s traditional architecture.
Above all, it is the natural beauty of Garmisch-Partenkirchen that leaves a lasting impression. The mountains, lakes, meadows, and forests surround the town and create postcard-worthy views in every direction.
